The most widely recognised form of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) body acupuncture focuses on balancing the body’s energy by inserting fine needles into specific points along energy pathways (known as channels or meridians). It’s used to address a range of health issues, from pain relief and stress reduction to internal imbalances and chronic conditions. This holistic approach aims to restore harmony throughout the body and mind.
Mild electrical pulses are sent through acupuncture needles to amplify the benefits of traditional acupuncture. This approach targets sports injuries, chronic pain, muscle spasms, and low mood, and supports fertility treatments. A gentle and soothing therapy, electro acupuncture provides consistent stimulation throughout your session, which many patients find both effective and deeply relaxing.
Rooted in the balance of the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water – Five Element Acupuncture emphasises treating both the physical and emotional aspects of health. This style aims to restore harmony by addressing a person’s unique elemental constitution, often using fewer needles with a focus on the body’s internal and emotional balance. It’s particularly effective for supporting mental and emotional wellbeing as part of a holistic approach.
A gentle and refined style, Japanese acupuncture uses very fine needles and places a strong emphasis on palpation to assess and guide treatment. The techniques are subtle, making this approach particularly suited for those who are sensitive to needles or seeking a gentler style. The focus on careful touch and precise needling helps to effectively treat a variety of conditions with comfort.
This approach targets specific muscle trigger points to alleviate myofascial pain and tension. Combining elements of TCM and modern dry needling, trigger point acupuncture focuses on releasing tight areas in muscles to improve mobility, relieve pain, and support musculoskeletal health. It’s especially beneficial for sports injuries, chronic pain, and tension-related conditions.
Modern acupuncture styles aimed at restoring balance and promoting healing by targeting distal points to influence the body’s energy. These methods are highly effective not only for rapid pain relief but also for addressing a wide range of internal and emotional imbalances. By improving circulation and harmonising the body’s natural energy flow, they support both immediate and long-term wellbeing.
Saam acupuncture is a Korean method that uses just four carefully chosen needles to bring balance to the body’s organ systems. Rooted in centuries of Daoist and Buddhist philosophy, it works to harmonise patterns of excess and deficiency by guiding the natural flow between yin and yang, interior and exterior, and the five elements. This minimalist approach is gentle yet powerful, often helping both physical and emotional wellbeing to settle into harmony.
Tuina, or Chinese medical massage, focuses on stimulating acupuncture points and meridians to restore balance and promote healing. It's a great choice if you're looking to relieve tension, improve circulation, or address both internal and musculoskeletal issues. Unlike most other forms of massage, tuina is typically performed over clothing or a sheet, using techniques like chopping, grasping, kneading, plucking, pressing, rubbing, squeezing, stretching, and vibrating to target the root cause of discomfort. Other complementary styles of therapeutic massage, whether soothing and restorative or remedial and structural, and of course acupuncture, can all be combined with tuina for targeted healing and a deeply relaxing and rebalancing experience. Points on the ear are stimulated to affect different areas and systems of the body. Effective for pain relief, stress reduction, and overall harmony. It is also used to support those dealing with addiction (NADA protocol) and to help manage anxiety (with the Battlefield Acupuncture approach).
Focuses on points on the scalp, stimulating areas related to neurological and motor functions. Often used for conditions like stroke recovery, migraines, or nervous system imbalances.
A gentle style of acupuncture using points on the abdomen — considered our energetic centre — to influence health and support a wide range of conditions, including pain, fatigue, emotional imbalances, digestive disorders, metabolic issues, and gynaecological health.
A set of acupuncture points located along the Bladder meridian on the back, each corresponding to a different organ system. These points provide a direct pathway to influence the organs, making them especially useful for internal conditions and chronic imbalances. Stimulating Back Shu points, along with Huatuojiaji points (located beside the spine and closely linked to spinal nerve pathways) can regulate organ function, balance the autonomic nervous system, and support overall vitality.

I can’t recommend Richard at Ki Acupuncture highly enough. I initially went to see him for TMJ issues, but his approach went far beyond just treating the immediate problem. He really looks at your overall health and wellbeing in a holistic way.
From the very first session, it was clear how knowledgeable and experienced he is. He takes the time to listen carefully, explain what he’s doing, and tailor the treatment to your specific needs. His calm, professional manner instantly puts you at ease, which makes a huge difference, especially if you’re new to acupuncture.
The results for my TMJ have been fantastic, but I’ve also noticed improvements in my general health that I wasn’t even expecting. Richard clearly has a deep understanding of his field and a genuine passion for helping people feel better.
If you’re dealing with TMJ or just want to improve your overall health, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him. An excellent practitioner and a genuinely caring person. Thank you, Richard!
Richard is everything you could want from a practitioner; professional, reassuring, sympathetic, and inspires the utmost confidence.
I would urge anyone seeking to have acupuncture treatment to "give it a chance." It's not just a quick fix. I committed to a course of treatments over the past five weeks and quite honestly can say that not only have my sessions helped to balance out my hormones, cravings, breathing and shoulder pains, but mentally it's been as good a total refresh and, in my opinion, more beneficial than a talking therapy.
Richard, as a health practitioner, immediately put me at my ease and reassured me. In fact, I have a history of being needle-phobic when needing to have blood taken over the years. Acupuncture is nothing like having blood extracted, nor is it like having an injection.
I would urge anyone in pain, or discomfort to seriously consider trying acupuncture as a well-respected and effective treatment. I literally can't recommend Ki acupuncture highly enough. Thank you, Richard. I look forward to "top up" treatments as and when. All the best.
Firstly, thank you greatly to Richard for making me feel so comfortable and calm during my acupuncture sessions. I was reluctant about going to a male, however Richard ensured he respected my values, maintained trust, and always assured me throughout.
I initially went to Richard for a trapped nerve. I felt instant relief from the initial consultation but knew I’d need a few more sessions to build myself back to normality, so I booked 4 sessions of acupuncture/massage (offered as per website).
Richard worked on a few issues discussed during the consultation alongside this and by the 3rd session I saw results! My pain was gone, the other issues became improved! I genuinely feel relaxed and calmer in myself and more relieved from the excruciating pain I was in.
Hopefully, my review expresses how satisfied I am with this, however in all fairness, my appreciation is beyond words and I’m extremely grateful for Richard and all he’s done for me! I would not turn a blind eye if you’re thinking about acupuncture with Richard! It is definitely recommended highly!
I have been attending Ki Acupuncture for a few months now and am part way through my treatment. Right from the beginning Richard was very professional and easy to talk to. I have ADHD and wanted to minimise some of the parts of being neuro diverse that I find challenging. My anxiety has significantly reduced, as have the headaches and the rejection sensitivity.
In every session Richard always listens to every detail and treats me accordingly. I feel so positive about Richard’s work so far – can’t speak highly enough about the benefits I have already experienced from my acupuncture sessions.
I have already reviewed Richard and Ki Acupuncture but that was early in the process, so I wanted to write another review.
I have been undergoing acupuncture for just under one year - the difference now to when I started is significant. I have ADHD and wanted help with emotional regulation including like many with ADHD-RSD (rejection sensitivity disorder).
I genuinely feel like a different person. I attend regularly - twice a month - and not only do I feel significantly better in myself but feel really happy that I am committed to self-care, continual maintenance, and a future where I can continually discuss any issues that come up - physical and/or mental - and it can be focused on via my acupuncture sessions.
I really enjoy my sessions with Richard - he is so easy to talk to and is such an attentive listener. Couldn’t recommend Ki Acupuncture enough!
When I started therapy, I was burdened by regular stomach anxiety and constant heat radiating through my body from my kneecaps up to my face, but after just a few weeks having acupuncture, many of my complaints eased. Richard guided me through the treatment with great patience including an improved dietary recommendation. I now feel more balanced and energised - getting back to feeling "normal" again. Richard is calm and well-grounded in his discipline. I would highly recommend his treatment.
After just two fertility treatments, I honestly feel like a different person. My sleep has improved, my circulation feels better, and I’ve noticed a real boost in my energy levels. I no longer get cramps before going to the loo, and the brain fog that used to slow me down has lifted. My period has been noticeably less painful and heavy, and for the first time in ages, it hasn’t interfered with my work. My mood is so much better too — I just feel more like myself again!
I would definitely recommend Richard to anyone considering acupuncture. From our first meeting, he was very approachable and made me feel comfortable and at ease. He took the time to really listen to my concerns before suggesting any treatments.
My issue was plantar fasciitis, and he mentioned he'd had good results treating it in the past—so I agreed to follow his plan. We began with three sessions close together, and I have to say: wow! What an improvement in just the first two weeks. The stabbing pains were gone, and now we're working on the remaining dull pain, which has mostly disappeared too.
Richard is using both electro-acupuncture and tuina muscle massage, so I’m receiving two complementary treatments—and the results have been fantastic.
A huge thank you to Richard for helping resolve such a painful issue!
I felt relaxed with Richard from the very beginning. His calming influence, clear explanations, and willingness to answer all my questions put me at ease right away. After the treatment, I noticed a significant and lasting reduction in my anxiety and fatigue – I felt so much better that I even brought my son to see him. Richard was incredibly kind and made my son feel comfortable and reassured throughout the entire experience. I would recommend Richard to everyone, especially if you’re feeling unsure or hesitant about needles!
I’ve suffered from triceps tendinitis for years due to weight training. I went to see Richard at Ki Acupuncture and the treatment was absolutely amazing. After a warm welcome, he assessed my problems and then got to work. Immediately after my appointment it felt like a weight had been lifted from my muscles. I am now able to extend my arm fully without pain, and the associated lat muscle pain has disappeared. Great service and would recommend to all.
After a fall and broken bone on left shoulder, I decided to get treatment from Richard. The acupuncture really helped me to manage the pain and help with mobility. At the time though, I was taking painkillers (co-codamol) and found that I had developed excruciating pain in my palms and legs. Thankfully, Richard recognised that my digestion had been affected as he worked out which areas of my body were suffering pain (apart from broken shoulder). This was a complete revelation as the indication was that my body could not digest the pain killers - even paracetamol.
I immediately stopped all pain killers and felt amazing straight away. No more pain and discomfort. I was so relieved.
Richard also gave me some great massage to help mobilise my arm and encourage movement where stiffness had set in.
Richard helped me in ways that no doctor could. I am truly grateful Richard, thank you. Richard has great knowledge, patience, understanding and friendliness.
Really appreciated the course of acupuncture sessions I had. Richard was incredibly thorough with questions about my history in order to decipher what was necessary for treatment. The environment of both Calverley and Shipley was calming and relaxing. I would highly recommend him to others.
I’ve had chronic back pain for most of my life. After a single session of tuina massage it felt 80% better immediately, and 90% better the next day. By the day after it had all but gone. Since then, Richard has also been working on my stiff neck and shoulder, with the same amazing result! Thank you!
Richard is extremely professional, kind and welcoming, and has helped me massively with my issues. He goes above and beyond to help his patients – would recommend to anyone!
I had very sore neck and shoulders, which Richard eased greatly in just one session with a combination of Chinese massage, acupuncture, and acupressure. I now have much more mobility in my shoulders, much less pain, and the whole area feels more relaxed. I’ve noticed I’ve been getting fewer headaches too, and less intense. Thank you so much!
Absolutely fantastic experience with Richard. Received treatment for my shoulder, which has been very painful for a long time – nothing has worked. Richard fixed my pain within less than 30 minutes.
He is extremely professional and kind, and has a kind & caring approach to his work. Very impressed – I highly recommend.
A complete sceptic… but suffering from chronic pain from severe osteoarthritis in my hip and knee. I had a Google – NICE guidelines recommended acupuncture so I thought, why not? I have never had any sort of complementary medicine before and still now I cannot see how it can logically work.
… It is working. I’m 5 weeks into treatment and my pain levels have reduced. My first week I had one day pain-free, but as treatment has gone on, I’m having longer periods of much less pain or no pain.
Not knowing what to expect, I have been led by Richard, who is incredibly patient and kind. At no point have I felt uncomfortable with him – even though I have some body confidence issues, I have still felt comfortable.
Will it work long term? I have no idea – my hope is I can get to a point where I need maintenance sessions. What I do know is I’m in a better position now than I was 5 weeks ago.
A little update on my treatment and progress. I have severe arthritis in my hip and suffer from referred pain in my knee as well as pain in my groin and back.
I had a total of 21 sessions, and I went for the acupuncture and massage package. I paid in 4-week bundles. I am aware of another subscription type plan running at the moment. Anyway, in those 21 sessions I have continued to work full time. I have been to Sweden for a conference. Went to Lincoln to see our son graduate. Been on holiday twice.
All of this has been possible due to the treatments. It has not fixed the problem, but it has definitely helped manage my pain and keep me mobile. I'm 24 hours post hip replacement now so I have suspended treatment but would not hesitate to go back in the future. I would recommend Richard and can't thank him enough.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my acupuncture sessions with Richard. My knee was giving me a lot of pain and was making my life very difficult. The sessions have relaxed me and taken away some of the pain. The relaxing atmosphere Richard creates is just what I needed to de-stress. Thank you so much!
Richard was extremely helpful. He listened and the treatments provided were effective and appropriate, changing as my needs changed. Overall, a very positive experience.
Had a great treatment with Richard – he was very thorough and helpful.
Every time I have had treatment with Ki Acupuncture, I have felt immediate improvement on the issue I have gone for. Could not recommend enough.
