COMPLEMENTARY Therapies

Enhance your treatment experience

Acupuncture is one of many therapies within Traditional East Asian Medicine. If appropriate, other therapies may be used if you so wish, either alongside or in place of acupuncture needles, to enhance your treatment experience.

Cupping therapy

Cupping (myofascial decompression) lifts the skin through suction to promote mobility, disperse adhesions, and encourage lymphatic drainage.

Cups can be moved across the skin for a gliding massage (dynamic) or left in place for a set time (static). Static cupping can leave bruise-like marks for up to two weeks but is safe, painless, and enjoyable.

Gua Sha

A scraping technique to improve circulation and mobility, often used for fatigue, inflammation, headaches, and immunity boosts.

Red spots, or "sha", may appear and remain for several days following treatment. These are thought to reflect areas of stagnation being addressed and are considered a normal and beneficial part of the healing process.

Moxibustion

The burning of Chinese mugwort close to the skin provides pleasant, penetrating heat for chronic pain or arthritis.

I also offer a smoke-free infrared heat lamp therapy alternative.

Acupressure

Ideal for those who prefer needle-free therapy. I apply gentle or firm pressures to acupuncture points and massage the relevant channels.

Acupressure is also an important part of any acupuncture treatment, helping to warm the area, make a connection, and assess qualities like tenderness, temperature, and tension, as well as serving as an effective and soothing therapy in its own right.

Massage therapy

Whether it's the restorative strokes of full-body Swedish massage, the gentle touch of abdominal, facial, or Indian head massage, the restful and supportive experience of reflexology, or the soothing flow of Chinese meridian massage, these treatments can complement acupuncture perfectly by promoting circulation, relieving nervous tension, and enhancing overall relaxation.

Tuina, which translates to "push & pull", is a traditional Chinese medical massage performed over clothing or a towel. Tuina incorporates chopping, grasping, kneading, plucking, pressing, rubbing, squeezing, stretching, and vibrating to stimulate the channels, address musculoskeletal issues, and restore internal balance.

Acupressure, joint mobilisations, and neuromuscular or myofascial release can also be incorporated where appropriate. I will discuss which kind of massage approach, or combination of approaches, might be most suitable for you. You can find out more about tuina and integrated massage therapies here.

Qigong

A traditional Chinese practice combining movement, standing, breathing, and awareness. Sessions explore mobility, balance, coordination, posture, and releasing unnecessary tension, alongside breathing and awareness practices.

The emphasis is on developing smooth, comfortable, connected movement, while giving the body and mind an opportunity to slow down and settle.

Beginner courses, ongoing group classes, private tuition, and online sessions are available. Visit the qigong page here.

Yoga

Bespoke yoga sessions tailored to your individual needs, experience, mobility, and interests. Sessions can focus on areas such as strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, mobility, breathing, and relaxation, or simply help you develop a personal practice that works for you.

My background in acupuncture, massage, and movement informs an individual approach, particularly when working with areas of stiffness, weakness, or restricted movement. Sessions can combine postures, movement, breathing, and quieter practices, with exercises adapted where necessary.

No previous yoga experience is needed. Private tuition is available one-to-one or for small groups, and sessions can also incorporate qigong where appropriate or if you’d simply like to explore both practices. Find out more here.

Tiny seeds or pellets placed on specific points of the ear. Stimulating them over time provides ongoing therapy between sessions.

Movement & stillness

I may recommend various yangsheng lifestyle practices – such as mindful movement, eating habits, sleep hygiene, and seasonal adjustments – as well as strength and cardio ideas to help you cultivate a balanced, healthy, and harmonious lifestyle.

Movement should be enjoyable and intrinsically fulfilling, not a burdensome chore. Similarly, creating and appreciating moments of stillness and rest, rather than constant distraction and busyness, is essential for enhancing our wellbeing and overall quality of life. This might range from an intentional meditation practice to simply making time and space for little "moments of zen" with a good book, a cup of tea, and a mind for calm reflection and relaxation.

Meaning & fulfilment

I may gently encourage you to examine other aspects of your life to find a sustainable path towards personal growth and fulfilment. Engaging in creative expression, finding opportunity for curiosity and play, spending time in nature, and nurturing meaningful social connections further enhances wellbeing, creating a holistic foundation for a truly contented and meaningful life.
