Qi Is Not Quantum: Why Acupuncture Doesn’t Need Particle Physics

Quantum Acupuncture?

In some corners of the acupuncture world, there’s a growing trend: attempts to explain acupuncture using the language of quantum physics. You may have heard the claims — that Qi is a form of quantum energy, that acupuncture works by collapsing wavefunctions, or that therapeutic intention (Yi, in Chinese medicine) influences healing outcomes through quantum entanglement.

At first glance, it sounds intriguing. Quantum physics is mysterious and cutting-edge; acupuncture is subtle and complex. It’s tempting to connect the two.

But while the impulse to explain acupuncture in scientific terms is understandable — especially in a culture that often demands such explanations in order to accept the medicine as valid — the use of quantum physics to justify acupuncture mechanisms is, at best, a misapplication of scientific language, and at worst, damaging to the credibility of the acupuncture profession.

This article aims to take a clear, measured look at why these quantum analogies don’t hold up, where the misunderstandings come from, and why Chinese medicine doesn’t need this kind of justification to be valid, effective, or worthy of respect.

What Is Quantum Physics?

Quantum physics describes how matter and energy behave at the smallest possible scales — that is, the level of quarks, electrons, and photons. At this scale, the rules are radically different from what we observe in daily life.

Here are a few of its key features:

  • Superposition: A particle can exist in multiple possible states at once — until observed or measured.
  • Entanglement: Two particles can become correlated such that a change in one is instantly reflected in the other, even at a vast distance.
  • Wave–particle duality: Particles like electrons and photons can behave like both particles and waves.
  • Observer effect: At such miniscule scales, the act of measurement profoundly affects the system being measured, suggesting that interaction is a key component of emergent reality.

Bizarre as they may appear, these are real, measurable effects. Their consistent probabilities allow us to build quantum computers, power MRI scanners, and engineer the microchips at the heart of modern electronics. Transistors — the building blocks of computer chips — rely on principles of quantum tunnelling, energy band theory, and the behaviour of electrons in semiconducting materials. Without quantum mechanics, there would be no modern computing, no smartphones, and no internet.

Quantum theory is one of the most tested and successful theories in all of science. But these effects only occur in very small, very isolated environments. They don’t scale up to larger, warmer, messier systems — like cells, tissues, or people.

This is where the popular quantum-acupuncture analogy begins to break down.

Why Quantum Effects Don’t Apply to Acupuncture

Quantum phenomena depend on the ability of particles to maintain their fragile quantum states. This requires extremely specific conditions: low temperatures, low interference, and minimal interaction with the environment.

Living organisms are the opposite of that. The human body is warm, wet, electrochemically active, and full of noise at the molecular level. These conditions cause quantum decoherence — meaning quantum effects collapse into classical behaviour almost immediately. This crucial fact is conveniently overlooked, or misunderstood, by proponents of a quantum mechanism of acupuncture.

Simply put: while quantum principles may underlie all matter at the most fundamental level, they don’t meaningfully influence how molecules behave in biological systems. Molecules — not particles — are the scale at which acupuncture interacts with the body.

This isn’t a flaw in quantum theory or in acupuncture. It’s just a case of using the wrong tool for the job.

What About Quantum Biology?

There is a small but growing field called quantum biology that explores whether certain biological processes might exploit quantum effects. A few interesting examples have emerged:

  • Photosynthesis: In some plants and bacteria, quantum coherence may help transfer energy more efficiently within light-harvesting complexes.
  • Magnetoreception: Some migratory birds may detect the Earth’s magnetic field using entangled particles within cryptochrome proteins.
  • Enzyme catalysis: Quantum tunnelling may play a role in certain fast biochemical reactions.
  • Olfaction: There’s a speculative theory that smell involves detecting molecular vibrations via quantum mechanisms, though this remains unproven.

These examples are real areas of research. But they are highly specific, involve sub-molecular-scale processes, and are not generalisable to acupuncture or macro-level interventions. There is no evidence — nor any plausible mechanism — to suggest that inserting a needle into the skin activates quantum entanglement or collapses subatomic wavefunctions.

What Is Yi — and Is It Quantum?

In Chinese medicine, Yi refers to intention, focus, or directed thought. It is closely associated with the Spleen and plays a vital role in guiding the flow of Qi. It’s not a vague or mystical idea; it's not a supernatural force — it’s a carefully defined mental quality that shapes attention, memory, and action.

Applied to acupuncture, it's concentration, presence, stillness, and care. It's the quality of awareness brought to the act of diagnosis, needling, and treatment — not just technical skill, but how that skill is applied.

Some have proposed that Yi works through quantum mechanisms — that intention can influence physical matter, or that healer and patient become “entangled” through shared focus.

Whilst there can be profound interactions and experiences of Deqi (Qi arrival, or therapeutic sensation) between practitioner and patient, extrapolating these to quantum entanglement is a fanciful poetic metaphor, not a scientific model.

While it’s true that intention plays a role in any therapeutic process — and that patient–practitioner relationship is a powerful influence on outcomes — this does not mean that intention manipulates the quantum field. There is no evidence that Yi produces quantum effects. And we should be cautious about suggesting it does — not because Yi isn’t important, but because confusing it with misunderstood science dilutes both concepts.

Why This Kind of Thinking Is Appealing

It’s easy to understand the appeal of quantum explanations. Acupuncture is often marginalised or misunderstood by Western medicine. Reframing it in the language of modern physics can feel like a way to gain legitimacy — to show that there is “real science” behind what we do.

Quantum physics is also mysterious and counterintuitive. Outside of the particle physics community, it offers a kind of intellectual cover for things we don’t fully understand. In this way, it has taken on a semi-mystical role in public imagination — a convenient stand-in for the unknown.

But this is where it becomes problematic. Because good science doesn’t offer certainty without evidence. It works from testable models, not metaphors. And just because something sounds plausible, doesn’t mean it holds up to scrutiny.

The Cost of Confusing Metaphor with Mechanism

Invoking quantum physics without understanding its limitations doesn’t strengthen acupuncture’s position. It undermines credibility — with patients, with scientists, and with those who might otherwise be curious about traditional medicine.

  • It turns a serious medical tradition into something that appears superficial or speculative.
  • It invites dismissal from critics who are already looking for reasons to disregard acupuncture and label it as pseudoscience.
  • It replaces the genuinely fascinating (and testable) physiological effects of acupuncture with unverifiable and unnecessary claims.

And ultimately, it reflects a kind of scientific insecurity — as though the value of acupuncture must be validated by importing terms from another discipline, rather than standing confidently on its own.

Acupuncture Doesn’t Need to Be Quantum

We just don’t need to trade uncertainty for speculation. The truth is: acupuncture works, and it doesn’t need quantum physics to justify it. Ordinary modes of research are proving fruitful enough.

There is growing research into how acupuncture:

  • Modulates brain activity (via fMRI and EEG),
  • Affects neurotransmitter levels,
  • Influences immune responses,
  • Regulates the autonomic nervous system,
  • Changes connective tissue behaviour,
  • And improves patient outcomes across a wide range of conditions.

These mechanisms are grounded in observable, measurable, physiological processes. They are not complete — but they’re real, and they’re growing, in some fields exponentially so.

This ancient therapy, rooted in East Asian traditions and practised for centuries, is fully integrated into primary care across China and much of East Asia — and increasingly recognised in the West. The evidence base is strong, and in some areas, acupuncture is as effective as, or even outperforms, standard care.

And yet, acupuncture isn’t grounded in Western anatomy or biochemistry alone. It rests on an entirely different way of understanding the body — one that’s coherent, structured, and deeply relational.

Qi, in the traditional Chinese medical framework, describes something functional, interdependent, and systemic — the intelligent organisation and movement of life processes.

It’s best understood as a functional and relational concept — a way of describing:

  • The quality and organisation of physiological processes,
  • The interaction between organ systems, emotions, and environment,
  • Patterns of health, imbalance, and change.

It’s not a “thing” in the sense that a photon or electron is a thing. It’s a model — a powerful one — but one that doesn’t need to be wedged into the framework of subatomic physics to be meaningful or valid.

Rather than claiming it’s “energy” in a quantum sense, we might say that Qi reflects the pattern and quality of physiological function. That might not satisfy someone looking for a reductionist mechanism — but it’s far more honest, and far more useful, than misapplied jargon.

There is still much to discover in terms of acupuncture’s mechanisms, but levering quantum mechanics into the equation to fill the gap is an unnecessary (quantum) leap!

Embracing the Unknown — Properly

One of the most important principles in science is knowing when to say, “We don’t know yet.”

This doesn’t mean giving up on explanation. It means remaining open, curious, and rigorous. It means valuing evidence over convenience, and clarity over impressiveness. The beauty of real science lies in its openness. It starts with a hypothesis, tests it rigorously, and even then, holds the conclusion lightly — knowing that new evidence could shift our understanding. It's not about defending a belief. It's about asking better questions.

By contrast, claiming that acupuncture works “because quantum” is often a way of papering over uncertainty with impressive-sounding language.

It’s a framework that tends to ask poor questions — if any at all — while making blind assumptions, ignoring important concepts like decoherence, and drawing convenient conclusions based more on wishful thinking and perceived parallels than on any testable mechanism.

This is not good science. It’s not good traditional medicine. And it doesn’t help the patient.

Acupuncture deserves better — and so does the public.

Honouring the Richness of Traditional Medicine

Let’s honour the depth and insight of traditional Chinese medicine without borrowing explanations that don’t fit. Let’s acknowledge the complexity of Qi, the significance of Yi, and the power of acupuncture — without reducing them to metaphors from physics.

There’s no need to explain acupuncture in terms of quantum entanglement or superposition. It works on the level of systems, networks, physiology, and relationship — and that’s more than enough.

The truth is, we don’t have all the answers yet. And that’s not a weakness. That’s a position of strength, humility, and integrity.

We don’t need quantum theory to make acupuncture real.

We need honesty, clarity, and the courage to sit with the mystery — while doing the work.
