The “Chinese clock” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a 24-hour map of the body’s functional rhythms. Each zang or fu organ system is said to have a two-hour “peak” when its energy, or qi, is most abundant.
In modern acupuncture, you’ll sometimes hear that treating someone’s primary disharmony at the relevant organ’s time can enhance results. In today’s world, that’s often impractical, but the concept as a whole is an interesting blend of observation, metaphor, and in many cases physiological reality... and it’s useful for more than just appointment timing.

Zang and fu: more than anatomy
In TCM, the zang are the yin organs: Heart, Lung, Spleen, Liver, and Kidney. They store and regulate vital substances such as qi, blood, and body fluids. The fu are the yang organs: Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Stomach, Bladder, and Gallbladder. They receive, transform, and excrete. This classification is based on function, interrelationship, and yin–yang dynamics, not simply on anatomy.
Organs in TCM have a broader remit than in Western medicine. The Spleen, for example, includes the digestive tract and pancreas, linking it to blood sugar regulation and post-meal energy. Closely related to its yang counterpart, the Stomach, the Spleen also draws nutrients from food and drink to make qi and blood, distributes these to the whole body, nourishes the muscles, supports healthy tone, keeps the body’s structures lifted and contained, relates to the Yi (mind or intention), and helps sustain lightness in body, mind, and thought. Yet it can be undermined by overwork or excessive study, worry, damp weather, irregular eating, or too much cold, raw food.
Each organ system also has emotional and spiritual aspects. For example:
- The Liver houses the Hun (the “ethereal soul”) which governs vision, planning, and direction in life, and is thought to influence dreams.
- The Lungs house the Po (the “corporeal soul”), associated with instinct, bodily awareness, and processing of grief.
- The Heart is linked with Shen, the spirit of consciousness, joy, and mental clarity.
- The Kidneys are related to Zhi (the will) and store Jing (essence), which underpins growth, reproduction, physical strength, and the body’s capacity to recover from illness or stress.
While the Chinese organ clock comes from a much older medical tradition, its emphasis on timing and the cyclical interplay between organ systems finds some intriguing echoes in what modern science has uncovered.
The science of organ rhythms
Modern chronobiology has shown that almost every organ has its own circadian clock. Digestion, heart function, liver metabolism, immune activity, and even kidney filtration follow daily rhythms, adjusting their activity depending on the time of day.
These rhythms are influenced by the brain’s central clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which communicates timing signals via hormones such as melatonin from the pineal gland, helping to align the body with the light–dark cycle. Each organ also contains its own “peripheral clock” that responds to cues such as light exposure, food intake, physical activity, and sleep.
This means that the idea of organ-based peaks is not entirely foreign to science, although the details don’t always match the Chinese clock exactly. Research also suggests that when these internal rhythms are disrupted — by irregular sleep, shift work, or eating at inconsistent times — the risk of metabolic, cardiovascular, and immune problems increases, adding weight to the idea that timing really matters for health.

Walking through the clock: TCM, science, and symbolism

3–5 am – Lungs
- TCM: Renewal of energy, processing of grief, outward connections, and strengthening of defensive qi. Lung time is a pre-dawn “in-breath” for the day ahead.
- Science: Lung function follows a circadian rhythm, with some respiratory conditions (such as asthma) worsening before dawn. Core body temperature is lowest at this time.
- Fit: Symbolism aligns with the pre-dawn stillness, as we transition from the yin introversion of the night to engage with the world around us. Physiologically, this is a vulnerable period rather than a time of peak output.
5–7 am – Large Intestine
- TCM: Physical and emotional elimination; letting go of whatever no longer serves us, whether that be food waste or emotional baggage.
- Science: Bowel motility peaks in the early morning, making this a common time for natural bowel movements.
- Fit: Strong overlap in both physiology and metaphor.
7–9 am – Stomach
- TCM: Best time to receive nourishment.
- Science: Morning digestion is efficient, with better glucose tolerance and faster gastric emptying compared to later in the day.
- Fit: Clear match between observation and physiology.
9–11 am – Spleen
- TCM: Transforms food into qi; governs focus and thought. Includes the pancreas, linking it to glucose regulation.
- Science: Insulin sensitivity and cognitive performance can peak in the late morning.
- Fit: Plausible correlation between Spleen time and measurable metabolic efficiency.
11 am–1 pm – Heart
- TCM: Joy, clarity, connection; governs the Shen, our conscious spirit.
- Science: Heart rate and blood pressure are higher than at night; certain cardiac events are more common late morning; alertness remains high.
- Fit: Reasonable alignment in activity and symbolism.
1–3 pm – Small Intestine
- TCM: Separates the clear from the turbid, both physically (absorbing nutrients) and metaphorically (making decisions).
- Science: Nutrient absorption is ongoing but not clearly at a peak here; some people feel an “afternoon slump” as blood is directed to the gut.
- Fit: Physiological link is modest; symbolism around discernment may be stronger.
3–5 pm – Bladder
- TCM: Stores and excretes fluids, and supports sustained effort through its close partnership with the Kidneys, aiding fluid regulation and drawing on Kidney Yang for activating energy.
- Science: Urine production changes over the day, but evidence for a peak here is weak. Some studies suggest alertness can rebound mid-afternoon.
- Fit: More symbolic than literal, but aligns with the “final push” before evening.
5–7 pm – Kidneys
- TCM: Store essence (Jing), governs growth, fertility, and willpower.
- Science: Kidneys follow a circadian rhythm in filtration and hormone release, though early evening is not a proven peak.
- Fit: Symbolically appropriate as a time to consolidate resources.
7–9 pm – Pericardium
- TCM: Protects the Heart, governs intimacy and emotional connection.
- Science: No clear physiological equivalent; socially, evening can be a time for close interaction.
- Fit: Mostly symbolic.
9–11 pm – San Jiao (Triple Burner)
- TCM: Harmonises and distributes qi; balances the body’s internal environment, regulating fluids, warmth, and Qi flow, so it can shift smoothly into rest and restoration.
- Science: Melatonin levels rise, and metabolism shifts in preparation for sleep.
- Fit: Good metaphorical alignment.
11 pm–1 am – Gallbladder
- TCM: Decision-making, courage, bile storage.
- Science: Bile secretion is continuous. There is anecdotal observation of sleep disturbances here, but no robust link to phenomena like night terrors.
- Fit: Mainly symbolic.
1–3 am – Liver
- TCM: Smooth flow of qi, stores blood, houses the Hun (vision, planning, dreams).
- Science: Liver metabolism is active during sleep, regulating glucose and detox pathways; some processes do peak at night.
- Fit: Partial metabolic alignment and a strong metaphorical connection to dreaming and renewal.
Beyond the clock: yin–yang flow and the six divisions

The organ clock sequence follows a yin–yang flow around the body: from the chest to the hand (Lung), up to the head (Large Intestine), down to the foot (Stomach), and back to the torso (Spleen), then continuing through the next two sets of four organs in the same chest–hand–head–foot pattern until it returns to the Lung.
In this way, qi is said to circulate in a continuous 24-hour cycle, nourishing each organ system in turn and linking their functions into a rhythm that supports the body’s changing needs through the day and night. In modern terms, this can be understood less as a literal substance moving from place to place, and more as a metaphor for the body’s cyclical shifts in activity, physiology, and repair.
The Chinese clock also relates to the classical “six divisions” — not as a mirror of the clock order, but as interleaved yin–yang pairings arranged “two together, two apart.” For example, Taiyin pairs Lung with Spleen, separated by the Yangming pair of Large Intestine and Stomach; likewise Shaoyin (Heart, Kidney) interleaves with Taiyang (Small Intestine, Bladder), and Jueyin (Pericardium, Liver) with Shaoyang (San Jiao, Gall Bladder).
These divisions are not only about physical location — for example, Yangming (“Yang Brightness”) occupies the anterior aspect of the body where we face the sun, while Taiyang (“Great Yang”) lies on the posterior, our least vulnerable surface — but also relate to how the body develops in the embryo. The germ layers formed during early development map closely to the six divisions, an observation highlighted by Dr Daniel Keown. This adds another layer of interest to the clock: it may reflect deep structural and developmental patterns as well as daily rhythms.
In clinic, the six divisions are useful for both classical point selection and modern systems such as the Tan Balance Method. Here, practitioners might choose points on a related channel by mirroring body parts, working through yin/yang partners, six divisions, or clock opposites (for example, Lung and Bladder). In this way, the Chinese clock informs not just when to needle, but how to combine points for systemic effect.
A bridge through time

The Chinese body clock is not a laboratory chart of organ output. It is a map of functional, emotional, and symbolic rhythms that sometimes overlap with measurable physiology. Modern chronobiology confirms that organs have their own clocks, and some of the TCM timings, such as those for digestion and elimination, align closely. Others match more in metaphor than in biology.
Its real value lies in three areas:
- Encouraging awareness of how symptoms and energy vary through the day.
- Offering a framework for point combinations based on yin–yang flow and the six divisions.
- Linking ancient observational wisdom to emerging scientific understanding of our body’s internal timing.
Used flexibly, it remains a fascinating bridge between tradition and modern science, and between the literal and the metaphorical.
